God Help Me: The Reverend Ike Project
In the 1970’s Reverend Ike stood virtually alone at the top of a dynamic, new American industry called televangelism. To the casual onlooker he was an outrageous con man; a black money preacher who was boldly unapologetic about making millions from his followers and famous for his gleaming jewelry, tailored suits, a fleet of Rolls Royces, and a head full of straight, black hair. To the hundreds of thousands who were guided by his teachings, he was no less than a visionary prince. “People are looking for themselves,†he told a reporter in 1975, “but most of them don’t know it. My message is self awareness. I glory in my own worth as a human being, and I am teaching others to know, love, and believe in themselves. Black people in America have been taught to believe in everything and everyone but themselves. I’m trying to change all that.â€Â
