Today's Generation

My generation has no idea how fortunate we are.  After hearing first hand, how these Texas Southern University students fought to end segregated laws in Houston, I now realize how privileged I am today to attend TSU.

Sure, today’s generation has faced subtle and not so subtle forms of racism, but I know that my generation has not faced the level of racism that the students did in 1960.  They are true heroes.

I recently had the experience of a lifetime to sit in on an interview that was conducted by Texas Southern University journalism professor Serbino Sandifer-Walker. TSU history makers like Arthur Gaines, John Bland, Holly Hogrobrooks, and Otis King were interviewed. I finally got answers to questions I had struggled with for sometime.

Listening to the stories, I came to realize that considering what we are up against today, getting a bachelor’s degree is far from enough. I’ve also decided to pursue a Master’s degree from a historically black university, where there will always be a constant reminder of struggles and sacrifices from which my education was born.

In a time when equality was something only dreamed about, several students at Texas Southern University took a stand to make equality a reality. They played a role in the Houston Civil Rights movement. Knowing what these pioneers did makes me proud to know that the people of the past cared about the future.

My goal is to become a journalist.  These pioneers’ stories have greatly inspired me and I am excited at the prospect that I will have an opportunity to tell compelling stories like theirs one day.

Knowing that these civil rights icons attended TSU makes me excited because I am a part of a wonderful legacy. Hopefully their story will inspire my generation to create a glorious legacy.

It takes a special kind of spirit, and will power, to stand up and demand change.  It is because of the Otis King’s, the Holly Hogrobrooks’, and the John Bland’s that I don’t have to suffer [daily] unimaginable injustices.

To know my university’s [TSU] place in history is something that any student and alumni should be proud of. The heroic actions by these freedom fighters should not be taken for granted or just remembered, but relived everyday of our lives.
