Texas Southern University was formally chartared by the state of Texas on March 3, 1947. It was originally called the Texas State University for Negros. Its name was changed in 1951. TSU is the second largest Historically Black University in the nation. It has several nationally noted academic programs and research centers including the Tavis Smiley School of Communication and a NASA Research Center, among several others.
